Extra High Voltage (EHV) Cabling

Having formerly designed high voltage (HV) cables for ASEA (SA) Ltd, designed & installed cable networks, served as client engineer, undertaken fault forensic analysis, & provided peer review services; VOLTONI LTD can offer a comprehensive cable engineering service – particularly in the extra high voltage (EHV) field. Recognised for expertise, Voltoni Limited is a participating member of Cigre TF B1.69, which is assigned to update the TB “Insulation coordination for HV AC underground cables system” – last published in 2001. Major cable projects assigned & successfully completed include: 132-kV Curtis Below Sea Tunnel (Queensland Australia)

The Gladstone to the Arrow LNG Plant high pressure gas pipeline onto Curtis Island in Queensland Australia includes a section of 6-km beneath the sea tunnel with an internal diameter of 4-m. This tunnel was designed by leading global engineering consultancy, Arup. VOLTONI LTD resources were employed by Arup to undertake the electromagnetic coupling effects of the 132-kV cable onto the pipeline, railway track and other utility services contained in the tunnel.

33-kV Kupe Wellhead Platform (New Zealand)

The reinstatement of Origin Energy’s 33-kV submarine umbilical cable between Kupe Production Station (KPS) & the Kupe Wellhead Platform (KWP) combined services off-shore oil platform – Taranaki New Zealand. Investigation report provided by VOLTONI LTD resources included the potential adverse effects that a corner grounded delta design proposal may have on the life expectancy of the carbon steel tubes (CST) & the application of the delta screen earthing technique. This study calculated the expected induced voltages & current along the cable screens & carbon steel tubes (CST) with various earthing options.

220-kV Manapouri Power Station (New Zealand)

Cable specialist advise was provided by VOLTONI LTD resources to Meridian Energy Ltd regarding the failure of the Manapouri Power Station 220-kV cable terminations. Cable sheath failures due to excessive current on sheaths in cases where cable glands have lost pressure with contact between sheaths & armour, & corrosion due to soil corrosive properties. Alternative design options such as additional earth continuity conductors (ECC); & single-end-bonded cable system with sheath voltage limiters (SVL) were evaluated; & it was recommended that the existing double-end-bonded system be retrofitted to a single-end-bonded system.

110-kV Larapinta Substation Establishment (Queensland – Australia)

Cable system design for Powerlink’s Larapinta 275-kV/110-kV Substation establishment project in Queensland Australia.  The selection of the proposed cable nominal conductor size & formation was based of normal, emergency & cyclic loading considerations. The normal load for the cable circuit was 300 MVA & the emergency 400 MVA.

132-kV Cable New Rizgary Substation to City Centre Substation Sulaymaniyah (Kurdistan - IRAQ)

The VOLTONI LTD resources were employed by MELEC (Lebanon) to carry out the detailed double circuit 132-kV cable system design which included earthing, electromagnetic studies, horizontal direction drilling (HDD), ampacity calculations, dynamic forces, fibre optic cabling design & specification, detailed drawings & cable pulling & testing plan.

Additional cable projects include

220-kV Brownhill-Pakaranga (New Zealand): Preparation of tender documents

275-kV Sandhill (Queensland - Australia): Carried out review and modification of technical specification for the procurement and installation of underground cable.

220-kV Desalination Plant (Victoria - Australia): Independent consultant reviewer for detailed design of 80 km of cable.

110-kV Windy Peaks (New Zealand): Conceptual design & costing
