Principal Engineer – Director

Tony brings more than forty years of diverse experience in the field of electrical engineering to Voltoni Limited. His strengths are twofold – he provides experience from been employed within diverse organisations and across a diverse range of projects, and he has extensive expertise as a specialist in the areas of electromagnetic field compatibility (EMC) and extra-high voltage (EHV) cables.

This includes research, design, project management, operations & maintenance, & transmission network utilisation. Main specialist area is in electromagnetic interference (EMI) which includes environmental risk assessment & lightning protection. Additional specialist areas include underground cable system conceptual and detailed design, specification & project management (up to 400 kV); & switchgear Arc-Flash-Hazard risk analysis & mitigation.

Throughout Tony’s working career, he has always realized the importance of maintaining a practical as well as an academic focus for mentoring engineering incumbents. He is currently appointed as an Honorary Research Associate (HRA) in the School of Engineering & Computer Science at Victoria University of Wellington. Tony has mentored several post graduate students including PhD students. Over the last eight years Tony has presented several courses for IDC in New Zealand, Australia & Indonesia. He has also assisted in compiling the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT Australia) Master Electrical Engineering (MEE) Course Development Program. The module he assisted in was ME 518 Electrical Safety & Earthing/Grounding. Also served on the Professional Doctorate Advisory Committee of the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT Australia). He held a position as a Director of Engineering Research for post graduate projects within ESKOM. This position evaluated the feasibility of research project, student’s progress, & the allocation of research funds. In addition, Tony compiled MSc (Power Engineering) courses for the University of KwaZulu Natal in the fields or Electrical Utility Refurbishment & Maintenance & Performance of Electrical Utilities.

Diverse qualifications include engineering, commercial & management – PhD (Electrical Engineering), BComm (Economics) & Advanced Executive Programme (AEP). Currently a member of CIGRE B1 Study Committees Task Force TF B1.69 for the revision of TB 189 – Insulation Coordination for HVAC Underground Cable Systems.
